There are three types of love. The first is "Eros" or erasthai in the original Greek - it is used to refer to that part of love constituting a passionate, intense desire for something, it is often referred to as a sexual desire. It is were our word "erotic" stems from, (Greek erotikos).

The second type of love is "Philia" and is more of a fondness and appreciation of another person, (friendship or brotherly love). Which by the way stemmed the name Philadelphia, or the city of brotherly love.

The third typ of love is "Agape" or the perfect paternal love of God for man. It is a perfect kind of love that is at once a fondness, a transcending of the particular, (goes beyond faults, etc.), and a passion without the need to be reciprocated or returned.

Agape love is also the commandment of God in the Christian religion. Love thy neighbor as thyself, love thine enemies, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might, and so on.

Getting away from the historical philosophy of the likes of Plato and Aristotle, love, (regardless of the form), is a choice.

You choose whether or not to love someone. There is the emotional rush and caring that comes with new relationships and feelings of loyalty with new friendships, but those will go away if you "choose" not to nurture those emotions.
